The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, on Tuesday received the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Somalia and Acting Ambassador, Sam Thomas, at his office in Mogadishu.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Somalia and the United Kingdom, with particular emphasis on cooperation in the defence and security sectors. Discussions covered continued collaboration on military training, capacity building, and joint efforts to combat terrorism, which remains a key priority for Somalia’s national security.
Minister Fiqi expressed appreciation for the United Kingdom’s longstanding support to Somalia, particularly in supporting the development of the Somali National Army and broader security sector reforms. He underscored the importance of sustained international partnerships as Somalia continues its fight against extremist groups and works toward assuming full responsibility for its national security.
For his part, Acting Ambassador Sam Thomas reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s security institutions and enhancing cooperation aimed at promoting peace, stability, and regional security. He highlighted the UK’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Somali authorities in line with Somalia’s security transition and stabilization efforts.
The meeting comes amid ongoing operations by Somali security forces against militant groups, as well as broader efforts by the federal government to strengthen national defence capabilities and reduce reliance on international forces.
The United Kingdom remains one of Somalia’s key international partners, providing support in areas including security, governance, humanitarian assistance, and development.
